The Magic House

Yesterday I went with Ellie's Kindergarten class to the Magic House. It makes sense why they call it this... Really an amazing kid's activity center! We spent most of our time in "the village" where there is a literal town you can explore and participate in..

A pizza restaurant... be a waiter, a customer, dishwasher, and check out your guests at a real cash register!

A marketplace... be a customer, a clerk, a stocker, a checker, with a real computerized scanner!

A hospital nursery... be a doctor, a nurse, feed, diaper and bathe the babies, fill out their official birth certificate!

A fishing pond!

An ice cream parlor... and Ellie's tonsils are all clear!

There was also a bank, a library, a post office... very fun!

And that was only one part of the Magic House... definitely going to have to go back!

Fun in the Snow

Just noticed this is my 600th post! ...........

Last Friday we had our 4th snow day. Actually Thursday was also a snow day, because we got a huge amt. and the temps were so low the next day that it all iced over. In Missouri, (doesn't this sound foreign in Texas!) if you have 4 snow days, you have to make up 1 school day. I guess it would just be unrealistic to make up ALL the snow days!

We are learning a bit more about snow...

-Buy a good quality sled. Sledding is no fun with a cheap-o sled.

-The big bag of salt from Lowe's doesn't last all winter. Next time, buy 2. And put the salt down the day BEFORE it snows.

-Snowmen aren't for day 1 of a snow. They are for day 2 or 3... it can't be too powdery or it will never stick together. Sledding, too, is more fun after a day or 2.

-Driving while it's snowing isn't that terrible. The visibility is a bigger concern than slippery roads.

-The school district won't notify you of a closing till 5:30am the day of. So just because you go to bed without a notice doesn't mean school is in session! Sometimes they send a text message, and sometimes a email. Check both!

Card Concert

On Sunday night, Jim & I attended a Michael Card concert. If you know me, or if you follow the blog, his music gets frequent mention! I think his lyrics are among the most meaningful words out there as far as Christian music goes. OK, to be honest, I don't like a lot of Christian music. But his creativity enlivens the imagination, so your heart can engage with the Word.

The concert was quite relaxed and "uncut." He played a couple of songs he hadn't even written the endings to yet. Felt like you were sitting in on a rehearsal while he told you what he was thinking about the direction of his new work. He has just finished a commentary on Luke, and his latest CD is called Luke: A World Turned Upside Down.

"Clarity and deep understanding is the child of its father, obedience. Man would often seek to understand before they obey. To begin to see clearly, I must begin to obey . . . often moving one dutiful foot in front of the other, until the weight of my burdened shoes begin to cause my strength to fail. Then and only then is my full heart more and more accessible for the touch and look of the Father of lightness and care."

I don't know where this quote came from. But... "the Father of lightness"... this caught my attention.

Christmas Continued in Texas

On the 27th, we took off at 4:30am for the long drive to San Antonio. We were determined to do it in one day! The girls did great and it really wasn't a bad drive. (Not that I want to do it again really soon!) But we even had an unplanned detour to Tulsa, stopped for a leisurely dinner outside of Austin, and still made it in 15 hrs.

The 28th was Nana's bday. The kiddos went in together and got her a spa package. Will she really go? And when she goes, can she really relax? I hope so!

All the girlie cousins: Aubrey (2), Ellie, K, & Elise

Ellie rejoices in new clothes from Elise.

I really enjoyed connecting with my niece Aubrey. Such a sweetie!

After San Antonio we made it up to Athens where Jim's parents live. At 5pm we watched the Rose Bowl where the Horned Frogs decidedly defeated Wisconsin. Now ranked #2 in the BCS going into next year's season! In light of the game, GG got Jim a present:

Then we had Christmas #...3? with GG & Da-- I didn't get too many pics of it, but a couple:

Christmas Day

We enjoyed a small Christmas this year in our new home! On Christmas Day we opened presents in the morning and had Jim's sister and family over for dinner on Christmas Day. It was relaxing. Refreshing, even!

Some of the top presents:

And I feel the need to add... no make-up Christmas morning!

A cute idea, I don't remember where it came from. Cost $2. A "mommy & me" journal. The girls write me notes and put it on my bed, then I write them back. A great solution to the constant need to have "private conversations" with mom.

Christmas morning breakfast:

Christmas Eve

It's Christmas Eve and it showed all day!

Our Christmas Eve tradition: Tortellini soup, Hot chocolate and cookies under the tree while we do our advent wreath, and the girls each pick one present to unwrap. I know this is a terrible pic but it captures the Christmas Eve glow...

Christmas Eve present:

Spontaneous Christmas Eve family pic

I can't remember at what point during Christmas these gifts were opened, but these pics are for GG: :)

Girls' Christmas Party Day

I know I'm only... 2+ weeks late on posting these, but I do get to things eventually! These pictures come from the girls' school Christmas performance & class parties, which was their last day of school before the holiday break.

K's 2nd grade class:

Ellie's Kindergarten class:

Ellie's friend Eloise... (They are in the "E" club, with Elise, whose names start and end with E.)

There were some videos from their Christmas performance, but I keep getting error messages when I try to upload them. I'll post them later if I can get them to work!

Pre-Christmas in Pictures

In early December, Ellie & daddy had a chance to share with her kindergarten class about living in China. See the tigers? She is telling them this has been the Year of the Tiger.

Ellie's tea party with her new friend Elise. (Also in the E club :)

Some winter photos: First big snow!

Gorgeous sunrise in our backyard!

It's gingerbread house time!

And Christmas cookie-baking time!

Our community fire department had a "Come meet Santa" party. We are really impressed with our city services!

Darkness & Light

My first fall in China (I was a chipper and confident 22), I learned that I didn’t know how to communicate. I don’t mean public speaking. I mean, honestly say what was true in my heart. And furthermore, I often didn’t even KNOW what was honest in my own heart.

What was my first clue? I still remember the discussion like it was yesterday. Our leader began a bible study with our group on the book of 1 John.

“God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. I we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Familiar verses, right? Darkness and light.

So he asked us, “What are your areas of darkness?” I didn’t understand the question. What are you talking about? I am in the light. I have a rare gift of deep spiritual maturity at 22.(Hee-hee.)

Another teammate began to share. And what she shared floored me. I had no category for it. I had never experienced it. She shared about struggle. INTENSE struggle. Doubt about the character of God. Doubt about her own identity in Him. Fighting the lies of the Enemy about God's care for her; Desperately trying and failing and trying to rest secure in Him.

What in the world is she talking about? If she had been a new Christian, or 14 or something, I would have understood. But here she was, having been a Christian a lot longer than me, having been in ministry a lot longer than me… what was going on? Something about it was real. Attractive. Honest.

Over the next year, I would begin to understand my darkness. I would witness people who struggled, and said so. I would witness people risking weakness in a community of acceptance and grace. I would see people share vulnerably about their sin, lovingly confronting those who hurt them, and asking forgiveness when they were wrong. I would learn from people who understood that, (as Peter Scazarro puts it), "You can't be spiritually mature without being emotionally mature."

(And for those of you who think that people in full-time ministry are on some higher spiritual plane, believe me when I tell you that this kind of community I have described above is extremely, extremely rare.)

So that was 1996. And over the next 15 years, I have understood more and more about my darkness.

Darkness is telling yourself that you will speak the truth about that painful incident, next time.

Darkness is believing that no conflict = peace.

Darkness is believing that being close to someone is about agreement. And the converse is also true-- disagreeing means we can't be close.

Darkness is trumping your heart with your mind, telling yourself you believe certain things are true, ignoring when your actions, thought life, and emotions scream otherwise.

Darkness is seeking to make God's reality true in your heart by your effort, lacking the freedom to say what is not true and letting Him do the miraculous in you.

Darkness is thinking that if I had just said it THAT way, or if I had approached it THAT way, (oh, wait, that didn't work), but THIS time if I do it THIS way, then that relationship will turn out differently. Yes, it's all up to me.

Darkness is seeking to be loved by making God (or others) happy.

Darkness is thinking that initiating is always good, or withdrawing is always bad.

Darkness is me in charge of my own growth process.

Darkness is thinking that spiritual growth is only about knowing God, and not myself. (Calvin said you can't know God without knowing yourself, and you can't know yourself without knowing God... The two go hand-in-hand.)

Darkness is seeking to know lots of truths about God but finding it almost impossible to be still and quiet with God, in His presence, not to gain anything from Him, but simply to be with Him.

The good news is that naming darkness means there is light. You cannot name what you cannot see, right? Can you name it?

And how can you name it?

(Just so it doesn’t sound like I’m saying over time I’ve gotten really smart and figured it out, or something ridiculous like that...And I'm asking HOW because it drives me crazy when some pastors' sermons could be summed as "BE HOLY!" without any acknowledgment that life isn't quite that tidy and the struggle is intense)

So, again, how can we grow to name our darkness?

Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

"For You light my lamp; The LORD my God illumines my darkness."

Satisfy Your Soul

Yes, I know it has been 2 weeks since I've written!

We enjoyed an at-home Christmas with Jim's sister, and then traveled down to Texas to be with family for the last week before the girls started school again (today!)

I picked up a book today that I've been intending to read for some time, called Satisfy Your Soul by Bruce Demarest. It's part of the NavPress series on Spiritual Formation. I ordered it during this semester on recommendation from one of my counseling professors, Dr. Zink. During our connection group time we were talking about spiritual life. Dr. Zink shared that during a season of difficult connection with the Lord, he read about a dozen books on spirituality, and this was his top pick in the field.

Dr. Demarest is a long time professor at Denver Seminary and has written a slew of other books, some more recent than this one on the spiritual life. But what I find intriguing in this work is his description of his own journey. He describes the humility of being a seminary professor who didn't much experience the reality of what he taught, and how the joy of discovering ancient practices of Christian spirituality transformed his life and the lives of his students.

Want to read it with me?
